Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.

Police report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.

The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then located numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police say preliminary tests show the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.

Municipal representatives announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.

A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism made him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the murder of nine people by a shooter targeting individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
