The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.
